The first person of sub-Saharan African descent to publish a book of poems in a western language was Juan Latino. A Black African ex-slave, born in 1518, he would in 1566 become the Professor of Latin grammar at the Cathedral in Granada. Both his appointment and the publication of his first book of poems in Latin in 1573, were unprecedented in the history of black Africans in Europe.
